Firefly – 1.8kW Weatherproof Slimline Halogen Patio Heater Review

Measuring in at 1.6m tall, this heater promises up to 7sqm of heat coverage and requires no ongoing maintenance, but at £200+ is it worth the money? Let’s find out!

Heating Area

Firefly say this heater can heat up an area up to 7sqm / 75sqft. At 1800W that’s more than believable and perfect for indoor and outdoor users.

Bulb Life & Heating Type

With a carbon halogen bulb, these elements provide instant infrared heat where it’s needed. Heating up objects and surfaces rather than the air surrounding it. This saves money and means this electric heater is substantially more eco-friendly than a gas heater.

As with other halogen bulbs, we would expect an average life of 5,000 hours per bulb. Thankfully replacement bulbs are only £14.99 from Primrose.

Power Settings & Specifics

This heater comes with two separate heat settings – 900W / 1800W.

Rated 220-240V and comes with a 1.7m power cable.

This is where this Firefly heater really stands out from the crowd. Its slimline design is nonintrusive and the silver aluminium die-casting is completely rustproof.

This heater adds a certain something to pubs and restaurants, and would fit in nicely around the home as well!

Features & Extras

Where to begin, this heater has a weatherproof rating of IP55, vastly superior to other Firefly heaters but what do the figures mean?

Solid rating 5 – protection from dust ingress and below.

Liquid rating 5 – protection from water jets.

This heater was built to withstand the elements and will survive outdoors without fear of damage or rusting.

We’re big fans of heaters that come with remote controls as it offers commercial users the ability to turn the heater on and off at will, but that’s not all! This heater also comes with a built in PIR sensor, which means it’ll turn itself off after 5 minutes if no movement is detected nearby.

A perfect addition to any commercial establishment and to those of us that are slightly forgetful at home! This feature will save you money and the environment.

It comes with a built in tilt-switch, so if the heater falls over, it’ll turn itself off.

Suitable For

The Firefly Slimline would make a great addition to any commercial property that needs to offer their clientele heat late into the night – restaurants, bars, clubs and the like would benefit from this outstanding heater.

It’s a bit tall for the average home user and there are other heaters out there that come with exceptional weatherproof ratings and long-life bulbs that aren’t 1.6m tall! But if you’ve got the space and want a durable patio heater that is suitable both indoors and outdoors then this heater fits the bill.

How much does the Veito Mini 1.2kW Heater cost to run?

This heater will cost you 4p per hour before electricity. (£204.99 / 5,000 hours – Check Latest Price). However, after the initial 5,000 hour period, it practically pays for itself, two replacement bulbs will cost you £30, which means this heater will cost just over half a penny (0.6p) per hour to run thereafter.

While the upfront running cost might be slightly higher than other heaters in this price range, the ongoing costs are minimal.

To factor in the cost of electricity, we need to do the following (based on an average price of 14.7p per kWh).

Heater running costs:

Full Power (1800W) – 1.8kW x 1 hour = 1.8 kWh x 14.7p = 26.46p (per hour)
Low Power (900W) – 0.9kW x 1 hour = 0.9 kWh x 14.7p = 13.23p (per hour)

Assuming we were to use this heater for 2 hours per day.

Full Power (1800W) – Our monthly electric bill will be £15.876
Low Power (900W) – Our monthly electric bill will be £7.938

This heater is one of the more economical on the market and your long-term savings outweigh the upfront cost.

PatioMate’s Thoughts

We feel like we’re giving Firefly too many positive reviews as of late, but that’s because they have an array of high quality products at a reasonable price. The only real negative we could find for this heater is the power cable length, at 1.7m some users may struggle to find the nearest power socket which is why we feel it’s targeted slightly more to the commercial sector.

That being said, it’s not too hard to find a weatherproof power extender!
