If you’re looking for a handy multi-purpose gadget to take camping, outdoors or to festivals etc then why not take a look at the OutXE 3 in 1 Lantern / Flashlight & Power Bank. This little device could be one of the best portable electronic camping lights on the market today. At just £26.99 (at time of review) this small, yet mighty lantern fills a great niche in the market.

Back in my festival days I would have taken one of these and a spare battery pack to keep my phone and various other devices charged for the 5 days of fun in the mud.

Nowadays it fits better in the workshop. I’ve used the torch umpteen times and the battery charging feature has already come in handy when the kids tablet ran out of juice!

The Good

It’s sturdy as hell. Traditionally I would have taken this to Download Festival and given it a real test but I gave it to the kids to play with in the bath to see if they could break it insteadthey didn’t so we can say that it’s truly weatherproof – thankfully they weren’t smart enough to unscrew the weatherproof seal and the device lives on!

The lantern is pleasantly bright and it would offer a user enough ambient light to undertake whatever task it at hand. The torch however was blindingly bright – a real plus.

It’s very light, at just 188g you won’t notice this on your person. The charging time is just 4 hours and you’ll have up to 30 hours of torch output from that 1 charge.

It makes for a great portable recharging camping lantern. It’s pretty cheap and comes with multiple features.

The Bad

While we can’t fault the device itself, we did come across a few little niggles with the device.

Firstly, the website and amazon listing claims a 200 lumens output for the £26.99 lantern (with green button) but the sticker on the lamp itself is 100 lumens. So we’re not entirely sure what the maximum light output is!

The lantern feature while offering a degree of light, doesn’t really compare to other camping lanterns out there in the same price bracket. This is a handheld lantern but there are others on the market that are cheaper with a larger battery but you sacrifice other things like durability, or you have to compromise on the IP rating.

This is an OEM product – the original costs a few ££ less but you’ll have to ship it from China and might get hit by customs, so its just easier to order from Amazon.

The OK

The 2600mAh capacity isn’t bad but I’d sacrifice weight, or cost for a larger battery. If you are stuck in the middle of no-where and need to charge your phone, you’ll get a half charge for more modern day smartphones. I think scrapping the 100 Lumens (@£20.99) and adding a £35 price point with double the battery capacity and a brighter lantern (600+ lumens) would be welcome to the market. Although it’d be significantly less portable.

Charging times for external devices is slow, but that’s to be expected from a portable charger with no quick-charge feature and a standard 5v 1a port. It’s there for an emergency rather than as a main feature.

Final Verdict

It’s priced a little higher than other portable camping lanterns but it’s worth every penny if you want something that isn’t going to break on first drop. The magnetic hold is actually incredibly handy and I’ve got mine stuck under my desk, waiting for the next zombie apocalypse.

Great for festivals, camping or emergencies. A must buy!

This handy little gadget costs the same as most high-street phone chargers but comes with so much more. Perfect as an emergency light, portable phone charger, for going camping, within the workshop or as a backup light in the car.
