Trampoline FAQ’s & Buyers Guide

Should I Buy My Child a Trampoline?

The Health Benefits of a Trampoline

The benefits of having a trampoline have been extensively documented – Toddlers and children who have free access to a trampoline are more likely to exhibit increased motor control and balance[1], better posture & flexibility, heightened self-esteem and trampolining also provides cardiovascular, health and fitness benefits.

Trampolining as an exercise is a low-impact activity but has been shown to be 68% more efficient as an exercise than jogging by NASA[2]. It is a whole body exercise as it requires the use of all your muscles to keep balance. When bouncing or rebounding it tones and builds abdominal muscles and targets the legs, thighs and buttocks as well.

It is a fantastic cardiovascular workout and it offers a disguised way to keep your children in shape, this is especially true for kids who aren’t fans of “traditional” exercise.

The increase in G force that the body experiences while trampolining also strengthens the skeletal system and can increase bone mass which can reduce the chance of osteoporosis[3] in later life.

Is a Trampoline Safe for Young Kids?

It’s worth mentioning that while there are documented health benefits for getting your children active on a trampoline, there are some caveats – younger children are more prone to injury.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents recommends that children under 6 do not use garden trampolines as they lack the motor skills required to control their bouncing.

Children under 6 also have softer bones, making them more susceptible to injury. Buying a trampoline with a handle or stability bar, will give your child the extra support they need to enjoy trampolining too!

We also recommend bungee strap trampolines over traditional spring based trampolines for 3-6 year olds as these offer a lower level of impact than their counterparts.

As with any sports activity, make sure you take the proper precautions to prevent injury wherever possible. This could include wearing safety pads, a helmet or buying a trampoline with a built in safety net.

Even with the proper precautions, sprains and boo-boos are inevitable. Make sure you’ve stocked up on Calpol, support bandages and sudocrem before letting your children bounce!

In summary, we believe children will benefit from trampolining and I allow my younger children to use trampolines. But do make sure you take the proper precautions by purchasing a trampoline suitable for their age and that you have the correct and suitable safety gear for them.

Always supervise your children while they bounce and remember to have fun!

Supervised Indoor Exercise

Mini trampolines and toddler trampolines come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Prices start from around £30.00 and portable or fold-able trampolines are available for those of us who are short on space or are lacking the outdoor space to install a full-sized trampoline.

By buying a small indoor trampoline you can keep an eye on your kids as they bounce – why not put on their favourite music or TV show to bounce along to, or better yet, involve your children in your daily exercise regiment and make it a bonding exercise too!
